Hotels in Las Vegas - A Brief History

June 21st, 2009 . by Guest

By Kylie Crosby

Back in the early days of Las Vegas and long before it became one of the most popular tourist destination in the world, hotel choices were few and far between. Today, all that has changed. And it has changed in dramatic fashion.

Each new resort that sprouts up on or near the Las Vegas strip has to offer something spectacular in order to compete with all the others. All or competing for your business, so it’s best to check out several before settling in on one.

The earliest period of growth for Las Vegas as a tourist destination happened back in the 1930’s and 40’s. That was when major hotels in Las Vegas began to dot the landscape here.

On what has since become the famous Vegas strip, there were those early casino resorts like the Dunes and the El Rancho. Later, along Fremont Street, along came the Golden Nugget, the Mint, and Binion’s Horseshoe. Next in line and back on the strip was the Flamingo, Sahara and Frank Sinatra’s favorite hangout, the Sands Hotel and Casino, which remained open until late November 1996.

These days the Vegas resorts are bigger and better than ever. As Las Vegas continues to grow in popularity as a vacation destination, so too have the resorts. They’ve increased in number and size, as well as in the range of choices available.

You could choose from the many accommodations on and around the strip and have a great time. But the hardest decision to make today is settling in on one resort. The best choices these days for comfort and amenities in a beautiful and luxurious setting include the Bellagio, Wynn, Encore, Venetian, Palazzo, Trump, Ceasars Palace and Mandalay Bay. But there’s also the MGM Grand, Luxor and Mirage that are right up there too.

The major Las Vegas hotels of today are massive in size, which leads to an almost never-ending variety. Most have multiple bars, coffee shops and restaurants. The MGM Grand for example, features 17 different eateries, including those carrying the names of world-class chefs like Emeril Lagasse and Wolfgang Puck.

Resort casinos are spacious, elegantly-decorated rooms with plush seating in a comfortable environment. Every major hotel also boasts at least one pool, relaxing spa, exclusive shopping and an unequaled quality of entertainment.

There is little doubt that when you think hotels Las Vegas - you are thinking of much more than just a place to sleep. These mammoth resorts one of the big reasons why Vegas has become such a popular destination for vacation and business travelers alike.

Seems like it has been a bit since I last posted. My bad.

We took a trip to Vegas last week for my 50th birthday. This was an all comp trip for the most part. We stayed at the Flamingo. Read the rest of this entry »

Imperial Palace

August 15th, 2007 . by Hotel Harry

Imperial Palace Carnival CourtMy last stay at the Imperial Palace was for 4 days in October 2006. This is one of the older hotels on the strip across from Caesars Palace. I have stayed at many of the hotels on the strip and it was time to give the IP a go.

I stayed there about a year ago and arrived around 9pm. This is always the worst time to a show up at any of the Hotels on the strip as the choice of room is more limited. Not really knowing the hotel that well, I made my standard request for a room with a strip view. MISTAKE!

The desk clerk when asked, “are your sure you want a strip view because the band plays until 2am?” I’m thinking, it’s Vegas and its no big deal I’m not going to use the room ’til late anyway. I can be bull headed about the the strip or I end up with a view of the parking lot and trash bins when I don’t get a room strip side.

I head up to my room on the slowest elevators on the planet… take a maze of hallways and get unpacked somewhere around 10. I can sort of hear the music, but I’m busy and not paying that close attention. I flip on the TV and sit down and fall asleep. Then, around 11:30 the music wakes me and it is LOUD. The band was great. But, I was really tired and had decided I did want to try to sleep. No way was sleep going to happen. I was up until 2am. I was too tired to leave the room and unable to sleep until the band stopped at 2am. Now I can’t say I was not warned.

The next day I requested to be moved and the hotel was accommodating. Overall the room I stayed in was clean enough, but the plumbing and the elevators ran slow. It was OK as it was cheap, but overall I would not highly recommend the IP for a stay.
