Monte Carlo in Las Vegas is On Fire
January 25th, 2008 . by Robb CheuvrontThe Monte Carlo is currently burning. The fire started about 2 hours ago and is under control. I am watching the fire live on KTVN Channel 13 in Las Vegas.
From the TV feed, you can see the fire fighters hanging out windows on the top five floors and putting out the fire. The Fire is located in the West Wing of the Monte Carlo and appears to have traveled down about 5 floors on the outside to the building.
It looks like the only thing that burned was the decorative foam and concrete facade material on the outside of the building. According to News 13, the fire did not go inside the building.
The winds were low in Las Vegas today and kept the spread of the fire to a minimum. The entire strip has been closed down to allow Clark County Fire and Emergency Crews in and out.
When I first saw the coverage on CNN there were brides-to-be and other hotel guests evacuating the building.
Right now the news crew is interviewing a guest who is a fire fighter. What this guest was saying makes me a bit nervous. He says that there was an alarm going off with an audio announcement that said they were investigating and to not panic. He said the construction crews on the City Center construction project were looking at the building burn, so the hotel should have been telling guests to get out… not investigating the alarm.
They ended up evacuating about 6 thousand people from the hotel. No one was hurt. Looks like fire protection plans that the hotels have had in place since a couple big fires like the one at the old MGM worked in this case.
There is no known cause of the fire at this point, but there were welders on the roof.
My wife and I are pretty familiar with the Monte Carlo as that is where we got married. It is one of our favorite Vegas places.
